Is it possible for me to get involved as an actress/singer at age 24?

I need some super-encouragement. Since I was 15, I have dreamt of becoming an actress/voice actor/singer. That dream came and went, as my parents (naturally) pushed me to go the practical way, and steered me away from my dream. Only now was I able to admit that to myself. I feel that most people start at a young age, and that time is running out for me.

On the other hand, Eva Longoria didn't make it big until Desperate Housewives, and she was just shy of 30. Jodi Bensen (voice of The Little Mermaid) was in her 30's as well, and there are many others who have started later in life and have become very successful.

I hate these ridiculous teens who make it with no talent just to serve as a role model for younger kids with their stupid, bubble gum music and "bratzy" outfits. If Hilary Duff, Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears and Lindsay Lohan can become singers, I guarantee I'm lightyears away from them! At least I have talent!

Is is even practical to get a degree in this field?

As cliche' as it sounds...the entertainment biz is about 5% talent....and about 40% work ethic. The other 55% is "who you know" and being in the right place at the right time.

Age really doesn't matter when you get started...what does matter is...are you putting yourself in positions where the right "people" will see you?

Unless you are going the route of musician...college degree is not absolutely critical. The only reason you would want the education for the musician path is...the more you know about the process of taking an idea and translating it into a marketable product (I.E. album) the better off you'll be....

I was told the same thing about the practical path....I've always been told the "odds" of success in the entertainment industry...if you know how to work the system...you increase those odds of success.

My advice...if you wanna act, start cutting your chops at a local theater group...do some searching for talent agencies in your area..find out what businesses are looking for in the area for local TV commercial advertisements...this will start the process of putting you in front of the people that can move your career in the right direction.

And most importantly...develop a thick skin. You will be told "you can't", "get a real job" and "your not good enough" a LOT in the process...Just remember that those telling you that you can't , aren't criticizing you because that they think you can't...but they are most likely afraid that you WILL!!
